2 The Shadow Line
Whether you use paper chart and compass navigation routinely, or mostly see it as a back-up to GPS and chart plotter, its reliability very much depends on the accuracy of your compass.

27 Tell Tales - Insure That Holiday Feeling
If you're not confident in your sailing abilities then insurance is the way to go, said Pepos, the Greek yacht charter base manager. His undertones of chauvinism and elitism were like a red rag to a bull and pre-planned decisions to opt for comprehensive insurance for the R2-million yacht were scuttled in a flash.

Funny old things, the Olympics mused a friend of mine recently - and that set my mind racing over the developments of the past year. It had been one in which his words rang horribly true. The selection of the nations teams always leads to tears before bedtime, no matter what system is used. Even based on a single regatta, the outcome may be clouded, or why has the United States choice of women's windsurfer wound up in court?
34 Katrine Cuisine - Broccoli
Broccoli
I have included broccoli in the list of vegetables on board, although the only way it is of any use for passage making is for it to be bought fresh and then frozen. But, for its high nutritional value and bright greenness, it is a vegetable well worth the freezer space.
36 GPS Deathstar
Possible GPS problem
The GPS system is extremely reliable, but there have been problems in the past such as the Y2K and GPS date rollover; events that effected particular receiver models. It seems that an old problem has re-surfaced.

48 Cruise: Part 1 - Call to Adventure Across the Pacific
It is 8 April 2007, and I am on board a Continental Airways flight from London to Panama. Leaving South Africa to go sailing across the Pacific feels like I have taken a huge leap of faith. I have jumped off a cliff and left everything behind. The hardest part has been saying goodbye to everyone in Cape Town. My heart feels vulnerable. I am trying to just stay open; stay in the present moment.
56 The Artemis Transat Singlehanded Race
This is the oldest solo race in history, and was the race for which the venerable South African yachting icon, Voortrekker, was built. Created in 1960 by Sir Francis Chichester and Blondie Hasler, this race has attracted sailing legends over the past four decades Bruce Dalling, Eric Tabarly, Alain Colas, Mike Birch and many others, including Dame Ellen MacArthur. This year, the Artemis Transat brings together two very different fleets, the radical IMOCA Open 60s and their small sisters, the Class 40 Monohulls.

On day one at Midmar the normal early morning breeze died before the scheduled start and at 10h00 the OOD, Dave Rushton, was pulling his hair out trying to lay a course. However by 11h00 it settled in across the dam wall and he was able to set a good course with the 13 entries starting together. The wind shifted slightly all day, but was always sufficient to ensure keen close tactical racing which is typical for this one design class. By the end of the day we had sailed 18 races and the three top boats were separated by only a few points.

86 Frostbite Regatta - Wriggleswade
The Eastern Cape/Border, Frostbite Regatta was hosted by King William's Town Yacht Club in late May, and the poor turnout was, I think, reflective of the state of sailing in the Border region. There were three entrants from KWTYC, three from ELYC, and one from BRYC, which totalled four Laser Radials, one Standard Laser, one Mirror and one Sprog - with an Optimist sailor getting his first lessons in sailing in the background.
